The concept behind this remodel was to change the existing traditional style kitchen to a unique eclectic style and reconfigure a functional and open layout using custom materials and features. This exciting combination of function and beautiful was tastefully conceived by Jim Dove of Canterbury Designs and perfectly executed by ShelCidy Custom Remodeling, Inc. and its superior team of Trade Partners.

The original kitchen had dark cabinets and granite and a small center island. The galley kitchen layout separated the adjoining family room with large high bar, limiting the bayside view from the bar area. Given the size of the residence, the kitchen seemed small and closed in.

By completely opening the area into the adjoining family room, the kitchen took on new light. A thirteen foot kitchen island provides ample workspace and casual dining space while creating a ‘visual stretch’ of the kitchen area. The longer upper cabinets and use of the tile on the upper walls add a vertical expanded appearance as well.

The custom materials for this project consist of polished concrete countertops with randomly distributed colored glass pieces. The wall tile pattern selected is Nadir, a 3/8” x 3/8” glass tile handcrafted from Sicis, Italy. This product is delicate and translucent, allowing its lighted appearance when placed over the existing windows. The floor is adorned with 24×24, polished onyx tiles, each uniquely beautiful as only natural onyx can be. The cabinets were all custom-made and stained to match accents in the glass tile and all appliances are the latest of the Wolfe family of high-end cooking components.

This combination of elements and creative visual effects come together to uplift the feel of this new kitchen and to catapult this meticulously implemented project into one of Sarasota’s most unique and beautiful kitchens.
